What does it mean to lie down in the 'lion’s posture'?

Can someone explain how does this posture looks like? Can someone also explain what time is the first watch of the night, what time is the second watch of the night, and what time is the last watch of the night?

And how is a noble disciple dedicated to wakefulness?
It’s when a noble disciple practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying their mind from obstacles.
In the first watch of the night, they continue to practice walking and sitting meditation.
In the middle watch, they lie down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.
In the last watch, they get up and continue to practice walking and sitting meditation, purifying their mind from obstacles.
That’s how a noble disciple is dedicated to wakefulness.

“Mendicants, there are these four ways of lying down. What four? The ways a corpse, a pleasure seeker, a lion, and a Realized One lie down.

And how does a corpse lie down? Corpses usually lie flat on their backs. This is called the way a corpse lies down.

And how does a pleasure seeker lie down? Pleasure seekers usually lie down on their left side. This is called the way a pleasure seeker lies down.

And how does a lion lie down? The lion, king of beasts, lies down on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other, with his tail tucked between his thighs. When he wakes, he lifts his front quarters and checks his hind quarters. If he sees that any part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is displeased. But if he sees that no part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is pleased. This is called the way a lion lies down.

And how does a Realized One lie down? It’s when a Realized One, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption … second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption. This is called the way a Realized One lies down.

These are the four ways of lying down.”

Have you seen pictures of Buddha parinirvana? That position is called the lion’s posture.

If they have divided the night into three parts, then each part will be four hours. In the Indian system, they divide 24 hours into 8 parts, so each part will be 3 hours. This is called prahar.

I don’t know the Pali term, but since the sutta has divided the night into three parts, we can assume each part is four hours. During the daytime, it’s easy to calculate time by looking at the sun’s position. What people in Buddha’s time used to calculate time at night, I don’t know.

They might have used an earthen pot with a very small hole in the bottom, adjusted so that in one part of the night, the full pot becomes empty. This is just my guess.

Hello, thank you for answering.

Is it like this? I’d like to sleep in this posture. The Jade Turtle Records 碧龜記: Parinirvana Day of Shakyamuni Buddha

Yes yes…I sleep like dead body posture…I feel that’s most comfortable for me …

Does this mean ideally monks should sleep 4 hours?

I don’t know about monks…and as Paññādhammika already said they can sleep till they get enough sleep…there is story when one monk over did meditation and he become ill .
Once u develop jhana and deep Vipassana all this things might be easy for you …

This is so true. I’ve noticed that when I’m lying on my bed and thinking about things related to sensual pleasures like music, I lie down on my left side. When I think about things like mindfulness, wakefulness, and renunciation, I’m more inclined to lie down on my right side.

I cannot sleep on my right side…most of time it gives me stomach problems… sleeping on my back is best for me …
It relaxing for me …
