This is a fairly good podcast interview with Patrick Wyman, historian and author of Lost Worlds of Prehistory. In it, they discuss new findings which change perspectives various ancient civilizations that rose and fell before recorded history, including much of the science and archeology from the last couple of decades which led to these discoveries.
“What happened in the Marroquíes and the other places like it in Southern Iberia is the rule in human past, not the exception. Villages, cities, and even entire socities are transitory, not permanent. Ancient ways of life that have flourished for millennia can and do end, sometimes quite suddenly. Societies dependent on fishing cannot survive in their current form when the ocean heats up and the fish disappear. Farmers working fields set in lush seaside plains cannot continue doing so when sea levels rise and waves inundate their crops. Volcanic eruptions bury large settlements in ash, and tsunamis wash away coastal villages. Old enemies and new invaders burn settlements, kill off family groups, and take the land.”
