I ask this because their job is basically to entertain people which will increase their greed, hatred, and delusion. It’s similar to being an actor. Game developers have to make the game addicting for users.
Make a game that is wholesome and addictive. Try to make something related to actually training the mind and actual giving dana and following morality.
The closest parallel is the actors go to hell sutta. How one monk explained it to me is, if you are an actor, play the good character or a character that doenst break precepts.
In the same way, when developing a game. develop a game that doesnt glorify alcohol, drugs, stealing, killing, etc. as you will get bad kamma from poisoning peoples minds to think those things are “cool”.
It is safe to say, the people who developed Grand Theft Auto probably got bad kamma.
I have been playing games for a very long time. As you mentioned, most games are like that. I think they are similar to movies or dramas. It is possible to create wholesome games. However, such games usually have low sales. And we also need to question whether they are truly wholesome. For example, a game about gardening is certainly more wholesome than a shooting game. But even such games stimulate desires. If we exclude these kinds of games, only a very small number of games would remain.
Yes thats just how it is unfortunately. Video game designer isnt really a right livelihood in todays world.
The same goes with restaurant owners/workers. It’s not bad in and of itself, but most restaurants sell alcohol and cant succeed without it. Much like the gardening games, or perhaps puzzle games like sudoku, if we exclude any restaurant that sells alcohol there wont be very many left.
