- hiriottappasampannā, sukkadhammasamāhitā, santo sappurisā loke, devadhammāti vuccareti: “Endowed with shame and fear of wrongdoing, established in pure Dhamma, being peaceful, good persons in the world, are called ‘having the nature of gods.’”
- tattha hiriottappasampannāti hiriyā ca ottappena ca samannāgatā: Here, “endowed with shame and fear of wrongdoing” means equipped with both shame (hiri) and fear of wrongdoing (ottappa).
- tesu kāyaduccaritādīhi hiriyatīti hirī, lajjāyetaṃ adhivacanaṃ: Among them, hiri (shame) arises due to bodily misconduct, etc., and it is known by the term “lajjā” (shame).
- tehiyeva ottappatīti ottappaṃ, pāpato ubbegassetaṃ adhivacanaṃ: Similarly, ottappa (fear of wrongdoing) arises from the same [basis], and it is the term for the alarm at doing evil.

- mādisassa paṇḍitassa bahussutassa idaṃ kammaṃ kātuṃ na yutta": It is not proper for a learned and well-informed person like myself to do this,
- evaṃ bāhusaccaṃ paccavekkhitvā pāṇātipātādipāpaṃ akaronto hiriṃ samuṭṭhāpeti: Thus, having reflected on one’s extensive learning, not committing the sin of killing etc., one arouses shame,
- evaṃ ajjhattasamuṭṭhānaṃ hiriṃ catūhi kāraṇehi samuṭṭhāpeti: Thus, shame that arises internally is generated by these four reasons,
- samuṭṭhāpetvā ca pana attano citte hiriṃ pavesetvā pāpakammaṃ na karoti: Having generated such shame and instilled it in one’s mind, one does not commit wrongful acts,
- evaṃ hirī ajjhattasamuṭṭhānā nāma hoti: Thus, is named the internally arisen shame.
