Help with a sutta

I was reading the Bhāvanāsutta recently. Within that sutta it says that someone practicing the path doesn’t know how many defilements have been worn away this day or the next day, but when they are gone they do know that. This confused me as according to what I understand of CT the defilements are only eradicated at the path moments. How to reconcile the two? Is it perhaps the case that the defilements get slowly weakened, but its the path moments which remove them fully? Any help would be appreciated.

I’ll just point out something from the commentary ( translating is bit too much for me right now)

ekāsane nisinnasseva vipassanaṃ vaḍḍhentassa anupubbādhigatena arahattamaggena avijjaṇḍakosaṃ padāletvā abhiññāpakkhe papphoṭetvā sotthinā arahattappattakālo veditabbo

This is a sutta directly intending upon/encouraging towards Arahantship.
