I read this in the Visuddhimagga yesterday:
And here [false-] view clinging, etc., are abandoned first because they are eliminated by the path of stream-entry. Sense-desire clinging is abandoned later because it is eliminated by the path of Arahantship. This is the order of their abandoning.
CHAPTER XVII The Soil of Understanding (conclusion): Dependent Origination
This confused me as I thought sensual desire was abandoned at the stage of Non-return? Any help on this?
In this section the Vism classifies the 4 types of clinging:
“firstly, there are these four kinds of clinging
here, namely, sense-desire clinging, [false-] view clinging, rules-and-vows
clinging, and self-doctrine clinging”
Three are eliminated at sotapanna and the last at arahat,
It is true that anagami has eliminated clinging to the five senses but I think here
the phrase “Kāmupādānaṃ pacchā, arahattamaggavajjhattāti ayametesaṃ pahānakkamo” might be referring to the whole range of clinging, thus even the subtle type that an anagami still has.
