7. Kaṇḍakavimānavatthu
“puṇṇamāse yathā cando, nakkhattaparivārito;
samantā anupariyāti, tārakādhipatī sasī.“Just as the moon on a full moon night, surrounded by constellations,
The lord of stars, the moon, revolves all around.“tathūpamaṃ idaṃ byamhaṃ, dibbaṃ devapuramhi ca;
atirocati vaṇṇena, udayantova raṃsimā.“So too, this divine mansion in the city of devas,
Outshines in splendor, like the rising sun.“veḷuriyasuvaṇṇassa, phalikā rūpiyassa ca;
masāragallamuttāhi, lohitaṅgamaṇīhi ca.“Made of lapis lazuli and gold, of crystal and silver,
With masāragalla gems, pearls, and red rubies.“citrā manoramā bhūmi, veḷūriyassa santhatā;
kūṭāgārā subhā rammā, pāsādo te sumāpito.“The ground, variegated and delightful, is paved with lapis lazuli;
Beautiful and charming pinnacled mansions, your palace is well-constructed.“rammā ca te pokkharaṇī, puthulomanisevitā;
acchodakā vippasannā, sovaṇṇavālukasanthatā.“And your delightful ponds, frequented by many creatures,
Have clear, pure water, and are covered with golden sand.“nānāpadumasañchannā, puṇḍarīkasamotatā;
surabhiṃ sampavāyanti, manuññā māluteritā.“Covered with various lotuses, spread with white lotuses;
Delightful fragrances, stirred by the breeze, waft all around.“tassā te ubhato passe, vanagumbā sumāpitā;
upetā puppharukkhehi, phalarukkhehi cūbhayaṃ.“On both sides of it, O devaputta, forest thickets are well-made;
They are endowed with both flowering trees and fruit trees.“sovaṇṇapāde pallaṅke, muduke goṇakatthate;
nisinnaṃ devarājaṃva, upatiṭṭhanti accharā.“On a soft couch with golden legs, covered with a shaggy rug;
Apsaras attend you, seated like a king of devas.“sabbābharaṇasañchannā, nānāmālāvibhūsitā;
ramenti taṃ mahiddhikaṃ, vasavattīva modasi.“Adorned with all ornaments, decorated with various garlands;
They delight you, who are of great power, and you rejoice like Vasavatti.“bherisaṅkhamudiṅgāhi, vīṇāhi paṇavehi ca;
ramasi ratisampanno, naccagīte suvādite.“With drums, conch shells, kettledrums, lutes, and tabors;
You rejoice, full of delight, amidst dancing, singing, and well-played music.“dibbā te vividhā rūpā, dibbā saddā atho rasā;
gandhā ca te adhippetā, phoṭṭhabbā ca manoramā.“Divine forms of various kinds are yours, divine sounds, and also tastes;
And fragrances are desired by you, and delightful tangibles.“tasmiṃ vimāne pavare, devaputta mahappabho;
atirocasi vaṇṇena, udayantova bhāṇumā.“In that excellent mansion, O devaputta of great splendor;
You outshine others in complexion, like the rising sun.“dānassa te idaṃ phalaṃ, atho sīlassa vā pana;
atho añjalikammassa, taṃ me akkhāhi pucchito”.“Is this the fruit of your generosity, or perhaps of your moral conduct;
Or of your act of reverence? Tell me, when asked.”so devaputto attamano…pe… yassa kammassidaṃ phalaṃ.
That devaputta, delighted in mind…pe… the fruit of which kamma.
“ahaṃ kapilavatthusmiṃ, sākiyānaṃ puruttame;
suddhodanassa puttassa, kaṇḍako sahajo ahaṃ.“I was Kaṇḍaka, the co-born of the son of Suddhodana,
In Kapilavatthu, the foremost city of the Sakyas.“yadā so aḍḍharattāyaṃ, bodhāya mabhinikkhami;
so maṃ mudūhi pāṇīhi, jāli tambanakhehi ca.“When he set forth for enlightenment in the middle of the night;
He, with soft hands and red, webbed nails,“satthiṃ ākoṭayitvāna, vaha sammāti cabravi;
ahaṃ lokaṃ tārayissaṃ, patto sambodhimuttamaṃ.“Tapped my flank and said, ‘Carry me, friend;
Having attained the supreme perfect enlightenment, I shall ferry the world across.’“taṃ me giraṃ suṇantassa, hāso me vipulo ahu;
udaggacitto sumano, abhisīsiṃ tadā ahaṃ.“Hearing that speech of his, great joy arose in me;
With a mind uplifted and gladdened, I then assented.“abhirūḷhañca maṃ ñatvā, sakyaputtaṃ mahāyasaṃ;
udaggacitto mudito, vahissaṃ purisuttamaṃ.“Knowing that the Sakya prince of great renown had mounted me;
With an uplifted and gladdened mind, I carried that supreme man.“paresaṃ vijitaṃ gantvā, uggatasmiṃ divākare;
mamaṃ channañca ohāya, anapekkho so apakkami.“Having gone to another’s territory, when the sun had risen;
He left me and Channa, and departed without looking back.“tassa tambanakhe pāde, jivhāya parilehisaṃ;
gacchantañca mahāvīraṃ, rudamāno udikkhisaṃ.“I licked his red-nailed feet with my tongue;
And watched that great hero departing, weeping.“adassanenahaṃ tassa, sakyaputtassa sirīmato;
alatthaṃ garukābādhaṃ, khippaṃ me maraṇaṃ ahu.“Due to not seeing that glorious Sakya prince;
I contracted a severe illness, and my death came quickly.“tasseva ānubhāvena, vimānaṃ āvasāmidaṃ;
sabbakāmaguṇopetaṃ, dibbaṃ devapuramhi ca.“By the power of that very act, I dwell in this mansion;
Endowed with all sense pleasures, divine, in the city of devas.“yañca me ahuvā hāso, saddaṃ sutvāna bodhiyā;
teneva kusalamūlena, phusissaṃ āsavakkhayaṃ.“And the joy that arose in me upon hearing the sound of enlightenment;
By that root of wholesome kamma, I shall attain the destruction of the asavas.“sace hi bhante gaccheyyāsi, satthu buddhassa santike;
mamāpi naṃ vacanena, sirasā vajjāsi vandanaṃ.“If, venerable sir, you should go to the Teacher, the Buddha;
Please convey my salutation to him with your head.“ahampi daṭṭhuṃ gacchissaṃ, jinaṃ appaṭipuggalaṃ;
dullabhaṃ dassanaṃ hoti, lokanāthāna tādina”nti.“I too shall go to see the Conqueror, the unequalled person;
For the sight of such World-Protectors is rare.”so kataññū katavedī, satthāraṃ upasaṅkami;
sutvā giraṃ cakkhumato, dhammacakkhuṃ visodhayi.He, grateful and mindful of favors, approached the Teacher;
Having heard the speech of the All-Seeing One, he purified the Dhamma-eye.visodhetvā diṭṭhigataṃ, vicikicchaṃ vatāni ca;
vanditvā satthuno pāde, tatthevantaradhāyathāti.Having purified his wrong views, doubts, and observances;
Having paid homage at the Teacher’s feet, he vanished right there.kaṇḍakavimānaṃ sattamaṃ.
The Seventh is the Kaṇḍaka Vimāna.
