Abhidhamma - origins

Sometimes people feel the Abhidhamma with its lists and precise categories doesn’t fit with what they read in the Suttanta.
But the details and precision help the wise reader to see these elements as they really are. And to understand that there are only conditioned dhammas, anicca and anatta.
When the Buddha was teaching Abhidhamma in the Deva world he also interspersed the Bhaddekaratta Sutta in order to further assist the devas.

"Let not a person revive the past

Or on the future build his hopes;
For the past has been left behind
And the future has not been reached.
Instead with insight let him see
Each presently arisen state;
Let him know that and be sure of it,
Invincibly, unshakeably.
Today the effort must be made;

When we read the Bhaddekaratta Sutta we may think it is obvious.
But awareness of the present moment is a conditioned phenomena. It is anatta and the details of the Abhidhamma make this clear. Thus the suttas, the Abhidhamma, and above all real understanding go together.

Without the Abhidhamma we may make effort to see the present moment but with the idea of a person who is doing so. Right effort arises with panna and with detachment - it is different from what we may have thought.
