Nobody has ever demonstrated how brain is conscious, but many theories have survived.
That is the limit of Cintā-maya-ñāṇa (theory).
They can’t give up these theories or they would have nothing, as all they have are theories that they will never prove to be true.
Narrative control is necessary, as they can’t just follow the SammasamBuddha, etc.
