Genuine question about Abhidhamma

This may be a naive question but - if the people back then could reach enlightenment without studying those texts, then why are they a necessary part of the path now?

Those who can be born and listen directly to a Sammāsambuddha have much greater pāramī than we do. Ours isn’t nearly as strong.
