Be Here Now - Dhammadharo bhikkhu

The interesting thing is vinaya. If there is no vinaya for the monk, there is no progress in the Path to Fruition that is why they call it an antarāyika dhamma. This is mentioned in the nidāna to the pātimokkha and also in pācittiya 68. It is one of the things that gives me faith or lack of faith in some monks or even methods.

If one declares that they are enlightened but use money or break other rules, then they are claiming that there are no impediments stated by The Buddha.

In short, the quote below is of a bhikkhu claiming that as he knows the dhamma, there are no impediments. The monk is supposed admonish him and “set him straight”. The pāḷi is not so difficult to understand.

  • ājānāmi = i know
  • antarāyikā = impediments
  • nālaṃ antarāyāyā = no impediments
  • māyasmā evaṃ avaca = Venerable, do not say that.

Yo pana bhikkhu evaṃ vadeyya ‘‘tathāhaṃ bhagavatā dhammaṃ desitaṃ ājānāmi, yathā yeme antarāyikā dhammā vuttā bhagavatā, te paṭisevato nālaṃ antarāyāyā’’ti, so bhikkhu bhikkhūhi evamassa vacanīyo ‘‘māyasmā evaṃ avaca, mā bhagavantaṃ abbhācikkhi, na hi sādhu bhagavato abbhakkhānaṃ, na hi bhagavā evaṃ vadeyya, anekapariyāyenāvuso antarāyikā dhammā antarāyikā vuttā bhagavatā, alañca pana te paṭisevato antarāyāyā’’ti.
